“To understand the man, you have to know what was happening in the world when he was twenty.” Napoleon Bonaparte
This research project studies the long-term impact of autocratic regimes on ordinary citizens – their political values and behavior. How do people that lived through repression develop democratic competences, identifies and habits? Here we address important and unresolved questions of democratisation, by using a new methodological approach of cohort analysis to examine the lasting legacy of authoritarian dictatorships.
